The Jordan Dickerson Memorial “Share The Music” Foundation Scholarship – Frequently Asked Questions

How many scholarships are provided?

One (1) scholarship will be awarded during the application period, and includes: A new guitar (acoustic or electric guitar package, recipient’s choice) and One (1) year of lessons (1-2 times per week) provided by Gift of Music Lessons. The lessons are taught at your home at no charge to the scholarship recipient.  (Scheduling restrictions may apply)

What is the deadline for applications?

All scholarship applications must be received by 5:00 PM on Friday, November 5th 2016. Top 3 finalists will be contacted by phone by November 12th and the award recipient will be notified by November 14th.

When will the scholarship award be presented?

The Scholarship will be awarded on Monday, November 28th at a special event called “Jammin’ for Jordan” which will be held at Roswell River Landing, 245 Azalea Drive, Roswell GA from 7:00pm – 10:00pm.  The recipient of the scholarship must be able to attend this event for the 8:00pm presentation; no exceptions will be made.

Who is eligible to apply?

The Jordan Dickerson Memorial Scholarship is open to all students aged 8 to 18 as of the application deadline.  Applicants must reside in the following Georgia counties/cities: Cobb, Cherokee, DeKalb, Forsyth, Gwinnett, and North Fulton, including the City of Atlanta.

Do applicants need to have prior musical training?

No previous music training of any kind if required. However, student must exhibit a strong desire to study music, and be willing to commit the time and effort to learning how to play guitar or furthering their skills.

What if the applicant already own a guitar or is enrolled in lessons? 

Applicants should not already own a guitar and/or be enrolled in lessons. The scholarship seeks to help a student/family unable to afford these.  Student may be in a “guitar class” at school, as long as they don’t own a guitar or pay for lessons.

Are there other requirements for eligibility? 

Parent or legal guardian must agree to release all photos, videos, etc. from the awards ceremony for use by The Gift of Music Foundation and The Jordan Dickerson Memorial Share the Music.  Parent or legal guardian must agree to provide regular progress updates, including pictures and/or videos as requested for one (1) year.

Will there be an opportunity to renew the scholarship?

This is a renewable scholarship based on criteria presented at the end of each year.

How does one apply for this scholarship?

There are two requirements.  First, parent or guardian must complete the online APPLICATION FORM and submit before the deadline.  Second, the student applicant must prepare a video application and submit the link to be considered.  Alternatively, a written essay may be submitted. Video essays should be between 1 minute and 3 minutes in length, or written essay 1-2 pages in length.  Creativity, sincerity, and enthusiasm are among the qualities that will be evaluated in the video and/or written submissions.

How do I submit my video or written application?

Videos should be uploaded to a public sharing site like Youtube, Vimeo, or similar.  Provide us with the link along with the application.  Written essays can be attached in either .doc, .docx, or .pdf format and submitted via e-mail along with the online application.  The address to send written essays is scholarships@giftofmusic.org
